Hello Adventurers,
As always, the LITs at Adventure Valley Day Camp had some incredible experiences throughout Week 3! Overall, it was filled with growth, laughter, and unforgettable memories as our LITs continued to develop their leadership skills and embrace new challenges.
On Monday, our LITs embarked on a new phase of their journey as they were assigned to different supervisors for their placements. This change allowed them to explore various roles within the camp community and experience even more aspects of camp life. From being sunshine counsellors, to assisting with Bunny and Kanga cabins, and even spending time with our Drama/Fitness and Arts/Crafts specialists, our LITs thrived in their diverse roles. Ultimately, by the end of the week, I observed as they approached their tasks with newfound confidence in their abilities.
Throughout Week 3, our LITs dedicated their time to learning and refining their leadership skills. Together, we explored the qualities that make a great leader, different leadership styles, the significance of teamwork, problem-solving strategies, and the importance of setting a positive example as role models. These valuable lessons are essential in preparing them for the exciting challenges that lay ahead – both within and beyond the LIT program.
To further expand their knowledge, some of our LITs signed up for the Babysitter’s Course. This course, which is a nationally recognized program offered by the Canadian Red Cross, equips them with some essential skills required for babysitting. As you can imagine, these skills also align well with the responsibilities of a camp counsellor. Overall, the course has been progressing well and we are on track to complete it early next week.
The highlight of Week 3 was certainly our LIT Schmooze on July 20. As part of a team-building exercise, our LIT crew took charge of planning and executing this camp-wide event. In line with the Toy Box theme for Week 3, the group came up with an entertaining game called “Staff-in-the-Dino.” Several staff members dressed up in inflatable dinosaur costumes (generously provided by AB) while the rest of Adventure Valley had to guess who was hiding inside each dinosaur! This was a humongous task; luckily, we had our LIT Security Team onsite to ensure that everything ran smoothly.
The LITs initially faced some obstacles while organizing the Schmooze, but they applied the leadership skills they had learned throughout the week to overcome them successfully. The result was a roaring success! Laughter echoed through the campgrounds as campers eagerly tried to identify the staff members inside the blow-up dinosaurs. Not only was it a perfect match for the Toy Box theme, but it also brought a lot of joy and excitement to everyone involved.
As we approach the final week of our LIT program, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and nostalgia. Week 4 promises to be filled with even more engaging activities and opportunities for growth. I am confident that our LITs will shine brightly in their last week and carry the lessons they’ve learned throughout their lives.
Your patron of placement and Schmooze enthusiast,
Nova (LIT Director 2023)
