Kangas Week 7

It is hard to believe that we just finished week 7 of camp. TIme is flying by, but Kangas are making the most out of summer. The buzz around camp this week was all about insects; Kangas truly “bugged out” in the best way possible! Campers were abuzz with excitement as they truly participated in a variety of activities that celebrated the incredible world of insects, all while strengthening the sense of community. The Kangas honed their collaboration skills this week, working together in everything from crafting intricate art to drumming in perfect harmony. Whether they were helping each other master new gymnastic moves or teaming up on nature walks to discover hidden bugs, the campers showed that collaboration is key to success. The power of teamwork was evident in every activity, as they learned that when they join forces, they can achieve anything.

From Arts & Crafts to Martial Arts, from Kangoo kids to Fimo clay, the Kangas had an incredible week trying a variety of activities. Kangoo sessions had our campers bouncing with joy as they hopped around like grasshoppers, showing off their agility and energy. The contagious enthusiasm spread through the group as they encouraged one another to jump higher and move faster, reminding us all that a little encouragement can go a long way. Drumming sessions this week had everyone “bee-ting” to the same rhythm, with campers coming together to create music that echoed the harmony of the natural world.

This week’s Fun with Frizzle, the Kangas unleashed their competitive spirit with a thrilling gaga tournament that had everyone on their toes. The excitement didn’t stop there –campers also tie-dyed bandanas, making colourful masterpieces they could wear with pride. The combination of energetic games and artistic expression made for a fantastic day, filled with laughter, camaraderie, and vibrant colours!

Community in Kangas is as strong as ever. A huge focus here at camp is building a community that is strong, welcoming and supportive, whether you’re here for one week or the entire summer. We focus on building connections that make every camper feel like they belong. This was beautifully demonstrated when a camper took the time to teach her group how to do cartwheels, sharing her skills and boosting everyone’s confidence. She was offering tips and tricks on how to make the cartwheels go faster and have a better landing. It was amazing to see how all of the Kangas were cheering each other on, as they attempted to perfect their cartwheels. Another heartwarming example happened when a camper, who was a little nervous on her first day, was welcomed by a returning camper who has been at AV for three summers. This seasoned camper, proudly wearing her turtle tag–a symbol of longevity and given to campers who have been at camp for three summers – took the newcomer under her wing, offering a tour and reassuring her that soon, she too would know everyone at camp. The returning camper’s words, “just you wait, soon you’ll know everyone at camp, and maybe you’ll even get a turtle tag in two years,” encapsulates the spirit of community that defines the Kangas and Adventure Valley.

This week at Schmooze, we had another fun filled week of activities that brought all our units together. We kicked off the week with Minute to Win it Monday, where we had eight staff battling it out to win the Week 7 Minute to Win it Monday crown. Staff worked in pairs, interlocking their hands and having to sit down on the ground and get up without using their hands. They battled it out and worked together with the crowd cheering them on, but it was Wheels and Sprite who came up with the win. During Tuesday Trivia, campers insect knowledge was put to the test and tried to win the coveted Freezie party. The Kangas did their very best, but it was a Froggies cabin that came up with the win! Wednesday Warrior was a battle to make it into next week’s finals. Working in pairs, the remaining six warriors had to put their memory and communication skills to the test, as they had to describe the puzzle to their partner for them to recreate. In the end, it was Zero and Wheels who battled their way into the finals. It was amazing seeing the campers cheer on the remaining warriors and we can’t wait to see who will claim the August 2024 Wednesday Warrior crown. Thursday Thingy’s had campers roaring during a leadership vs staff football game. It was red vs yellow and even though the leadership team battled it out, it was team yellow who came up with the win! We ended the week off with Birthday City, as we celebrated five birthdays at camp! We then honored three Big Chair winners in Kangas and four silly banana winners! We can’t wait for our last week of fun next week!

Staff Celebration Moment: Celebrating Sticks

This week, we want to shine a spotlight on Sticks, whose kindness and compassion shine through in everything she does. Sticks has a special way of connecting with campers, always ensuring they feel values, supported and happy. Her creativity brings magic to every activity, and her deep care for each camper is evident in how she advocates for their needs and makes sure they’re having the best time possible. As one camper put it, “Sticks makes everything fun. She’s the best.” Sticks truly embodies the heart of Adventure Valley, and we’re so grateful to have her as part of our camp family!

Caregiver Question of the Week

Can I send my camper to camp with toys?

No. They often get lost and/or ruined. We have found it creates more exclusionary, rather than inclusionary play. Thank you for your understanding! 🙂
