Kangas Week 1

The Kangas had a jump-tastic first week here at camp! We spent the week getting into our rockets, exploring space, and taking a look into the future to see what we will be when we grow up. Our campers had an awesome time trying out all kinds of new and exciting activities, getting crafty, and building community. Our occupation of the summer is to work on a new quality each week and this week the Kangas were jumping at the chance to show their cooperation skills. Over on the Kangas Savannah our campers embraced cooperation at every chance they had, whether it was during Unit Time, Gaga Ball, or Fimo, our campers were sharing, encouraging each other, and inviting new friends to play. There was not a single cabin huddle where I didn’t hear one of our Kangas say, “do you want to come play with us?” to a new friend.

Out of all the activities they tried this week, Gaga ball was definitely a favourite, but the competition was definitely stiff with a line up like Gymnastics, Kangoo Kids, and so many more. Even with this heat wave, the Kangas didn’t let it get in their way! They made it a competition to stay hydrated and apply our sunscreen, with many trips to the water bottle filling station.

When asked “what do you want to be when you grow up?” a very common answer was Astronaut, so during unit time we took advantage of this and prepped our campers for their journey to the stars! Inspired by their passion for the planets and moonwalking, the Kangas started with an astronaut preparedness test with Hippo & Rio, testing their reflexes and getting a little sweaty. Then, they moved on to discover their very own planet with Sprout & Claw, here they designed their very own planets using bright markers, pipe cleaners, and their imaginations! We saw some of the coolest maps this side of the O-zone, and personally I can’t wait until someone finds a way to get to Party planet, where dance parties are mandatory! After discovering their planets, the Kangas moved on to help get our KSRS III (Kangas super rocket system!) rocket off the ground by designing their very own logo to be displayed on the exterior while it orbits through the galaxy. We saw some really awesome creations, from personal logos to the coolest icons designed exactly for the rocket, and don’t worry, our space-tastic photographer Dragonfly was sure to take photos of every camper who wanted a chance to sit in the rocket, be sure to check out Waldo to see some pictures from our space adventures!

This week during Schmooze the Kangas won a special place in the hearts of their favourite staff through their eagerness and enthusiasm to cheer them on during Minute to Win it, Wednesday Warrior and more. As their counsellor Claw raced for the finish line, strapped into her cardboard shoes, the Kangas were the loudest cheering section I’ve ever heard! The competition was stiff, but the Kangas were sure to spread their encouraging chants to some of the favourite specialists as well. This weeks was definitely a Wednesday Warrior to remember!

Staff Celebration: Shouting-out Sprout!

This week, we want to give a shoutout to our friend Sprout, who gave it his all! With never- ending enthusiasm and AVDC spirit, Sprout filled the Kangas Savannah with endless smiles and laughs as he encouraged each and every camper to get out of their comfort zone and try new things. Every morning during drop off Sprout greeted each camper with a big smile, and ended every pickup with a high-five. As part of his mission to build community and hone his campers cooperation skills, Sprout always participates alongside them. On Friday, Sprout and his awesome co-counsellor Claw had a competition to see who could get the most arrows in the target, and when he lost graciously accepted his losing fee of 3 cups of water to the face!
