When your kid says they want to be... a hat

A couple of years ago, I got a text from a friend:

After a good laugh — she’d gone from wanting to be a doctor to wanting to be a hat! — we spent the afternoon sketching ideas and sending photos back and forth. The end result? A perfect hat costume that she absolutely loved and still talks about.

Kids have the best imaginations, don’t they?

This year, my 4-year-old decided we’re going full-on Paw Patrol — he’s Marshall, my daughter’s Skye, my husband’s Ryder (I finished his duct-tape vest last night!), and I’m Everest. Assignments made and approved by the 4-year-old Boss himself.

At camp, I get to see that same kind of creativity in action all summer long — and it’s one of my favourite parts of what we do. We nurture and celebrate those big, wild, wonderfully imaginative ideas that kids come up with every day.

This summer alone, I saw:

  • A counsellor running a soccer game with four teams, four nets, and eight soccer balls.

  • A group of campers, with the help and encouragement of their counsellors, changing the lyrics to the hit song “Chicken Banana” to be all about how much they love their Unit Head

  • A crew of campers inventing new spices for friends to dress up as, once the five original Spice Girls were taken.

It’s amazing watching how their minds work — the problem-solving, the teamwork, the laughter — and I can’t wait to see it again this summer!

Cheers for now,

Ashlee
