LIT Week 1

Hello Adventurers,

I hope you are looking forward to an awesome summer filled with excitement and wonder at Adventure Valley Day Camp! This Tuesday marked the beginning of our highly anticipated Leadership-in-Training program. Over the course of the next four weeks, six talented young minds will embark on a journey of personal and professional development. Undoubtedly, our LITs will continue to strive for new heights! From day one, the LITs showed remarkable enthusiasm and an eagerness to get to know their peers. They have since formed strong bonds and are quickly becoming an inseparable team.

This past week, our LITs have been engaged in a wide range of activities aimed at building their communication skills. By recognizing and improving upon the five types of communication—oral, written, non-verbal, contextual, and active listening—the LITs acquired new knowledge that will surely benefit them in the future. These skills will be invaluable as they continue to grow and embrace new leadership opportunities.

Our first week ended on a high note when our very own KB took home one of the first silly banana charms of the season! These charms are awarded to the campers with the most incredible costumes on Fridays. K’s creativity and dedication shone through with his wonderful “Under the Sea” costume. Congratulations, K, on this well-deserved recognition! I cannot wait to see what incredible costumes our LITs will create for next week’s theme: Art Attack!

As we move into the coming week, most of our LITs will begin their AV placements. By now, all LITs have been assigned a placement supervisor and they are bubbling with excitement. These placements are an essential part of the LIT program, since they provide both firsthand experience and an opportunity to put their newfound skills into action. LITs could be placed with either a Bunny counsellor(s), a Kanga counsellor(s), an activity specialist, or a sunshine counsellor. During their placements, LITs will shadow their supervisor and provide assistance wherever needed. The goal of AV placement is to help LITs develop the necessary skills to become exceptional AV camp counsellors in the future. With such amazing role models to guide them, this ambition is well within reach!

I hope you are all as excited as I am about the progress our LITs have already made this week. I look forward to seeing what incredible adventures lay ahead of them! Remember to stay hydrated, wear sunscreen, and embrace the spirit of Adventure Valley!

Your captain of curiosity and bringer of Big Chair energy,

Nova (LIT Director 2023)
