Kangas Week 2

What a week it has been for our Kangas! This week was filled with laughter, teamwork, creativity, and so many moments where campers showed us what makes our community so special. One of the biggest highlights was seeing our campers come together during our Jivin Joeys adventures and throughout the week’s activities.

During Jivin Joeys, our campers were sent on an out-of-this-world mission when Rubber Ducky travelled to Area 51 and accidentally released monsters and aliens around camp! Each cabin worked together to collect the correct creatures and safely bring them back to home base. Along the way, campers discovered that teamwork is not just about having great ideas—it is also about listening to each other. At one point, groups realized they were confused and had to stop, regroup, and communicate more clearly. This became a great learning moment as campers saw firsthand how important it is to slow down, listen, and work together. After completing their mission, campers used those same teamwork skills to create their own Monsters vs. Aliens board games, combining everyone’s ideas to make something truly unique.

A moment that stood out this week was watching Abby from K1 step into a leadership role during fort building. Abby was always curious, asking thoughtful questions, helping her teammates, and encouraging others to share their ideas. She showed that leadership is not always about being the loudest voice—it is about supporting the people around you and helping a team succeed. Seeing campers like Abby grow in confidence and kindness is one of the most rewarding parts of camp.

Our specialist activities were full of excitement this week! During Sports with Jay, campers had an amazing time running, competing, and cheering each other on. The energy was high, but what stood out most was the teamwork and communication happening on the field. Campers were learning that being a great teammate is just as important as scoring a goal. Everyone left with smiles, laughter, and plenty of stories to share.

K2 had the chance to become little scientists during ice cream making with Zig-Zag. Campers worked together to follow the recipe, measure ingredients, and discover the science behind turning simple ingredients into a delicious treat. It was a great opportunity for campers to practice patience, teamwork, and problem-solving while enjoying the reward at the end!

K1 got creative with Shrinky Dinks, designing colourful UFOs that transformed from drawings on paper into hard plastic creations. Campers loved watching their artwork change and seeing their imaginative ideas come to life.

One of our favourite traditions this week has been the Rubber Ducky Challenge. Every cabin worked hard throughout the week to earn the chance to take home the ducky by showing teamwork, responsibility, and pride in their space. Campers came into lunch ready to help each other, assigning jobs, reminding teammates to clean, and celebrating their progress together. K3 and K4 especially spent the week determined to earn the ducky, but every cabin was successful in earning it at least once because of their commitment. By the end of the week, their hard work paid off as the cabins demonstrated incredible teamwork and earned the Rubber Ducky Challenge for keeping their lunch areas clean and working together.

Our Kangas also had an unforgettable sports moment this week with our Campers vs. Counsellors basketball game! K1 brought their competitive spirit and had an amazing time challenging their counsellors. The excitement was contagious as campers cheered each other on, celebrated every basket, and were absolutely thrilled when they came away with the win. It was a perfect example of the confidence and community that grows when campers are given opportunities to try new things and celebrate each other.

During Schmooze this week, we celebrated some amazing accomplishments across the Kangas. Congratulations to Fluffy and Emu for advancing in Wednesday Warrior! We also want to recognize our campers who reached special milestones this summer, and were awarded coveted longevity Radtagz. Congratulations to Owen, Cameron, Meera, and Chloe for earning their 3-year Tagz! We are so proud of the memories you have built at camp over the years.

A big congratulations also goes to Aanya for winning a Silly Banana this week, and to Wellington and Lincoln for winning Big Chair! These fun traditions are a wonderful way to celebrate campers and the unique personalities they bring to our community.

Staff Celebration Moment

This week’s staff spotlight goes to Surge! Surge brings so much creativity, kindness, and care to camp every single day. He is always finding new ways to make camp engaging and exciting, especially for his K1 campers. Every morning, Surge arrives with a bag full of fidgets ready to help campers start their day feeling welcomed and supported. He has a wonderful ability to notice when campers need extra encouragement and always makes sure they feel safe and included.

This week, Surge went above and beyond by using his prep time to lead a special cabin activity where campers created Shrinky Dinks and watched their designs come to life. He brings the same enthusiasm to everything he does, including dressing up for Fridays and being a positive role model for the campers around him. We are so grateful for the energy, kindness, and creativity Surge brings to our Kangas community.

Caregiver Question of the Week

How does the Tuck shop work?

On a Unit designated Tuck Day, counsellors receive a tuck order form with their attendance. If a child has money in their account, counsellors ask campers to choose from a list of items. Our office packs the tuck and counsellors hand it out at afternoon snacktime!
